Republican Election Plan: Kill the Poor (Written before 2018 Congressional Elections)
By Art Edelstein
With nothing else to run on except Donald Trump’s two years of democracy destruction and international alliance shredding, the Republican Party has finally found its real Election Day slogan: “Kill the Poor.”
Here’s how it works. Get rid of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or at the least remove the pre-existing condition proviso in the law. When this is accomplished, a series of events will unfold ensuring that Republicans remain in charge of government until the end of time.
1-When people can’t get coverage for an existing medical condition they will not be able to pay for the medical care they need. An example: Prostate cancer – a hospital bill of at least $150,000 if you get radiation. Thus these people will have to live with their condition and probably die an earlier death than if treated. This will affect primarily poor people, and we know the poor generally vote Democratic. Fewer Democrats in the voting booth equates to a higher Republican vote ratio and many more election wins.
2-Insurance costs in general will go up because that industry will not be constrained by government regulation. With rising costs fewer people will be able to afford coverage if they have no employer to help pay for it. People will skip doctor visits and their preventative care. They will get sick and probably sicker than if they went to the doctor more often. This lack of coverage primarily affects low income Americans who have to watch their pennies. They will die before their time. Again, we are talking mainly about Democratic voters. Republicans will once again find themselves with fewer opponent voters on Election Day.
3-Medicines will become more expensive if Republicans win both houses of Congress in the upcoming election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to repeal the ACA if his party remains in power in both houses. Medicine prices will rise as a result. Poor people will lose out once again as higher costs drive them to cut their prescriptions into smaller doses or stop taking their meds completely in the battle between bills and food. With more poor voters unable to take the correct medicine doses, more will eventually die than need to and again, there will be fewer Democratic votes to contend with at the ballot box.
4-With all these dead or debilitated poor unable to vote, Republicans will win more seats in Congress. As a result, they will strip away the social safety net, cut Medicare to shreds, make Social Security a weak sister and leave any remaining programs that help the poor, like food stamps out in the cold.
5-As a result of all these factors, the Republican majorities in Congress will continue to slash taxes for the rich and the country will eventually fall deep into debt. Support for public education will stall and schools will either close or be so overcrowded or teacher depleted that a public school education will be worthless. The poorly educated masses will, of course, not understand voting rights and will be easily intimidated should they try to vote. Poorly educated they won’t know about new medicines and lifesaving procedures. They too will die earlier than they should.
6- The rich will benefit as the poor die off. They will continue to be able to pay for their medical needs. They will continue to buy health insurance because they have the cash. Insurance premiums for the wealthy may drop as fewer and fewer high risk insurance subscribers (the poor) remain on the rolls. The rich will not need Medicare or Social Security but will pay for home health assistants who travel with them to their favorite vacation resort and golfing spot. The children of the rich will remain in their private schools and continue to go to the Harvards and Yales of this country. Community Colleges catering to poorer student s will eventually close due to lack of students.
The Republican election dream is now knocking at our doors asking for our vote on November 6. While they won’t say it out loud, in Republican country clubs, golf links, and cloak rooms around the country they can be heard whispering “Kill The Poor.”
